Volvo just entered the fight for the best electric SUV of 2026 — and it came in swinging. The all-new EX60 starts at ~$59,795 in the US, delivers up to 400 miles of EPA-estimated range in its top P12 spec, charges at 400kW and undercuts the BMW iX3 by $3,000. It is the electric sister to the best-selling Volvo of all time. It goes on sale this summer. And it may be the most complete electric SUV ever built by a Scandinavian brand.

Why the EX60 Is Volvo's Most Important Car in Years

The Volvo XC60 is the best-selling Volvo of all time — more than 2.7 million units sold globally since its launch in 2008. It sits at the very heart of the brand's identity and revenue. For Volvo to build an electric version of this car and get it right is not optional. It is existential. If the EX60 fails, Volvo's electrification strategy fails with it.

The EX60 does not look like it will fail. Built on the brand's all-new SPA3 platform — the first Volvo ever to use this architecture — it introduces technologies that no previous Volvo has offered: cell-to-body battery integration, megacasting construction, 800-volt electrical architecture and Luminar LiDAR safety sensing. It won What Car?'s Readers' Choice Award for the most exciting car coming in 2026 before a single customer had driven it. Production at the Torslanda plant in Sweden began on April 22, 2026. US deliveries start this summer.

Three Powertrains — One Clear Answer

The EX60 launches in three configurations. The P6 is rear-wheel drive with 369 horsepower and an estimated 310 miles of EPA range — the entry point to the range. The P10 AWD adds a second motor for 503 horsepower and 4.6-second 0-60mph capability, with approximately 320 miles of EPA range. And the P12 AWD — the range-topping version — produces 670 horsepower, reaches 60mph in 3.9 seconds and delivers up to 400 miles of EPA-estimated range from its 112kWh battery.

Every variant uses the same 800-volt electrical architecture and NACS charging port — giving all EX60 buyers native access to the Tesla Supercharger network with no adapter needed. All three share the same SPA3 platform, the same Thor's Hammer LED headlights, the same 14.5-inch central touchscreen running Android Automotive and the same standard Luminar LiDAR safety system. The choice between them is purely about how much power and range you need.

The Charging — 400kW, 170 Miles in 10 Minutes

The EX60's charging performance is extraordinary. Maximum DC fast charging is rated at 400kW — matching the BMW iX3 and surpassing every other Volvo ever built. At a compatible 800V ultra-rapid charger, the EX60 can add 170 miles of range in just 10 minutes, or complete a 10-to-80 percent charge in approximately 18-19 minutes.

Volvo has developed dedicated charging optimisation software — including algorithms from its portfolio company Breathe Battery Technologies — that constantly monitors the battery's condition and adjusts how it accepts power to keep it in its ideal operating zone regardless of temperature or weather conditions. The EX60 also comes with a 10-year battery warranty as standard — a commitment to long-term ownership confidence that goes further than most rivals offer.

The Technology — SPA3, Megacasting and Luminar LiDAR

The SPA3 platform introduces two manufacturing innovations that Volvo describes as transformational. Megacasting replaces hundreds of individual body components with a single large aluminium casting — reducing production complexity, improving structural rigidity and cutting manufacturing weight simultaneously. Cell-to-body integration builds the battery pack directly into the car's floor structure rather than mounting it as a separate module — lowering the centre of gravity, improving rigidity and freeing up more cabin space.

Standard on every EX60 is a Luminar LiDAR sensor mounted at the top of the windshield — a long-range laser scanning system that can detect objects up to 600 metres ahead, enabling the next generation of Volvo's driver assistance features. Pilot Assist 3.0 allows hands-off highway driving with continuous driver monitoring on approved roads. Next-Gen City Safety can detect crossing cyclists and pedestrians at night and applies automatic emergency braking at intersections.

How It Compares to the BMW iX3

The comparison that every EV buyer in the premium SUV segment will make is between the EX60 and the BMW iX3 — and it is genuinely close. The BMW iX3 starts at $62,850, delivers 434 miles of EPA range in its best spec and charges at 400kW. The Volvo EX60 P6 Plus starts at ~$59,795 — $3,000 less — with 310 miles of EPA range in entry spec, scaling to 400 miles in the P12. Both use NACS and native Supercharger access. Both are built on new-generation 800V platforms.

Where the EX60 pulls ahead: standard Luminar LiDAR on every model — something the iX3 does not offer. The P12's 670 horsepower versus the iX3's 463 horsepower. And in WLTP terms, the EX60 P12's 503-mile figure is one of the highest of any electric SUV in the world. Where the iX3 pulls ahead: 434 miles EPA versus 400 miles EPA in top spec, and BMW's driving dynamics reputation. For most buyers, the EX60 represents slightly better value at entry level and comparable performance at the top.

The Interior — Scandinavian Calm Meets Google

Inside the EX60, Volvo has kept its signature philosophy intact: clean, uncluttered, materials-led luxury rather than technology for technology's sake. The dashboard centres on a 14.5-inch vertical touchscreen running Android Automotive OS with Google Maps, Google Assistant and Google Play built in. A digital instrument cluster sits directly ahead of the driver. An optional augmented reality display projects navigation data into the lower windshield area without requiring the driver to look away from the road.

The cabin uses sustainable materials throughout — recycled content in the seating, natural materials for trim surfaces and what Volvo describes as the most eco-conscious interior specification it has ever offered in a production car. Cargo space is 490 litres — 17.3 cubic feet — practical for family use. The flat SPA3 floor creates generous rear legroom. The EX60 can also be linked to your phone via the Volvo app so that doors unlock automatically on approach — and even if your phone battery dies, holding the phone near the door pillar still grants access.

Price and When to Buy
US Starting Price ~$59,795

The EX60 P6 Plus starts at approximately $59,795 in the US — undercutting the BMW iX3 Sport by $3,000. Full pricing across all seven trim levels and three powertrain options will be confirmed when the configurator goes live in the first half of 2026. US deliveries of the P6 and P10 begin in summer 2026, with the P12 AWD following later in the year. Australian deliveries of the rear-wheel drive P6 are confirmed for late 2026.

For buyers in the market for a premium electric SUV, the EX60 is worth waiting for rather than rushing into a competitor purchase. At $59,795 for the P6 entry point, or scaling up to the 400-mile, 670-horsepower P12, it offers a combination of range, charging speed, safety technology and Scandinavian luxury that nothing else at this price quite matches.

"The EX60 is the electric sister to the XC60 — the best-selling Volvo of all time. Its job is to show that switching to electric means gaining something, not giving something up."

— Volvo Cars, Official Communications, January 2026
Rev N Rise Verdict

The 2026 Volvo EX60 is the most complete electric SUV Volvo has ever built — and one of the most compelling in the premium segment globally. Standard Luminar LiDAR. 400kW charging. Up to 400 miles EPA range. 670 horsepower in top spec. A 10-year battery warranty. NACS as standard. And a starting price of $59,795 that undercuts the BMW iX3. The XC60 took 18 years to sell 2.7 million units. If the EX60 delivers on everything it promises — and the early evidence suggests it will — it may not take nearly as long.
